🚐 How to get to Sumela Monastery from Trabzon

The monastery sits about 45–50 km (around 30 miles) south of Trabzon in Altındere Valley National Park, near Maçka. Your options:

  • Tour with pickup – easiest, zero planning.
  • Dolmuş (shared minibus) – Trabzon to Maçka, then the park shuttle. Cheapest, but slower.
  • Rental car or taxi – about an hour each way.

🥾 What to expect

From the shuttle drop-off it's a short but steep uphill walk with stairs. Wear real shoes, bring water, and dress modestly – it's a religious site.

Pro tip: Flying in from the US? Most folks connect through Istanbul and take a quick domestic flight to Trabzon (TZX). Booking a package that includes the airport transfer saves you a ton of hassle.

Sumela Monastery History in 60 Seconds

Why is there a monastery stuck to a cliff in the middle of nowhere? Here's the short version.

Byzantine frescoes of Christ and the Virgin Mary painted inside Sumela Monastery

The legend: Around AD 386, during the reign of Emperor Theodosius I, two monks from Athens – Barnabas and Sophronios – are said to have found an icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave on this cliff. The icon, known as Panagia Sumela, was traditionally credited to St. Luke. They built a church right there to house it.

The glory days: The monastery was rebuilt several times. It got its biggest boost in the 14th century under Emperor Alexios III of the Empire of Trebizond, who – legend says – was saved from a storm by the Virgin Mary.

Abandoned: In 1923, after the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the monks left and the monastery was abandoned. A fire around 1930 destroyed its wooden parts. The famous icon ended up at a new Panagia Soumela monastery in northern Greece.

Today: Sumela is a museum. It was added to UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List in 2000, closed in 2015 for major safety and restoration work, and reopened to visitors in 2019. Don't miss the Rock Church and its frescoes – they're the heart of the place.
